How 1-hour yoga affect your mental health?

Yoga has long been perceived as a wonderful workout method that have great impact on both physical and mental health. This fact seems hard to believe for many people as from their perspective, those simple yoga postures together with the “art of breathing” barely have connection with their inside feelings as well as so-called “self-reflection”. However, studies have shown how an hour yoga practice could release stress, anxiety, tension, anger and improve the quality of sleep.

Briefly defined, yoga is a practice of physical exercise combining held pose (Asana), regulated breathing (pranayama) and meditation techniques. Researchers from London conducted some experiments on how different yoga postures have effect on participants’ feeling. Results showed that when people perform particular yoga poses, it makes them feel energetic, empowered, and in control of body. Hence, they tend to be more confident and satisfied with themselves.

Moreover, the positive impact of yoga can be linked to better function of a mechanism called vagus nerve, which is in charge of connecting brain and body movement. When people have the feeling of satisfaction, the vagus nerve sends a signal to control facial expression in a positive way. The same results are observed through caring behaviours when people are calm and relaxed after a yoga class. This came to a conclusion that proper yoga poses could create good feelings and lead to long term happiness with frequent yoga practice.
